Like many other teachers, I loved my job. In fact, I loved all my jobs - teaching, coaching, directing, and serving on lots of committees. As an addendum, I must say that I really looked forward to summer vacation. Those who are not in the field of Education don't know that teachers get zero down time during the day. So many people with regular office jobs can say "Hold my calls" and shut the door for a few minutes of recuperation time, but not teachers! Teachers can't even blink for too long, because in a classroom of 30 students, one never knows what is going to happen.
Most teachers I know continue to work on tasks like curriculum or tutoring students, but the everyday pressure is less.If the should district decide on a new textbook, the teacher's entire summer is preoccupied with becoming familiar with the book and creating new lessons. I know that many folks seem to think teachers get too much vacation, but I disagree. The stress and work levels for teachers are over the top.
Maybe the year-round school model would actually be better for both students and teachers. Instead of one long vacation, 3-4 week breaks would be after every semester. I actually believe that schedule would cause less student and teacher burnout.
Whatever your school calendar is, I wish my teacher friends relaxation and rejuvenation! You will need all the energy you can muster for the beginning of the school year.
As always, I welcome your comments and suggestions.

I LOVE writing. And I love writing children's books- my newest passion. Although it will be a ton of work, I am looking forward to selling my books. Since I was a secondary teacher, I know that I have much to learn about elementary students, and I will have to follow my own advice and be my genuine self. However, I also know that I am passionate about helping kids who have to wear glasses, and that GRADY GETS GLASSES sends a positive message. I am willing to work hard and do all the things that also made me a successful teacher for 37 years. I remain inspired!
