"It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are." E. E. Cummings

                                                                    Fearless Motivation

This week my friend Dan Blanchard published his memoir, A FIGHTING CHANCE: A 40-YEAR JOURNEY FROM MY BIRTH UNTIL MY BROTHER'S DEATH, with the Kindle version now available on Amazon.

https://www.amazon.com/Fighting-Chance-40-Year-Journey-Brothers-ebook/dp/B0BK4XRT4J/ref=sr_1_2?qid=1667250516&refinements=p_27%3ADan+Blanchard&s=books&sr=1-2

Dan's book chronicles growing up in an abusive household, with a father who had a penchant for beating his wife and children, especially when he was drunk, which was almost daily.  Dan shares specific stories that are etched in his memory from the time he was a very small child until he was 40 years old.  I must tell you that at times, this book was not easy to read, especially when Dan remembers some horrible childhood incidents that continue to affect him all these years later. Although difficult to read, Dan stays his own course and becomes a champion wrestler and a great teacher, so the book is also inspiring and uplifting.

I have known Dan for several years, and two of the things I like the most about him are his optimism and his consideration for others.  After reading his memoir, I admire those qualities more than ever, because if just can't fathom where he got the courage to sustain himself in the house of horrors where he grew up, and to transform himself into the family man, loving husband and father, and caring teacher that he is today.  I also believe that Dan shows a great amount of courage in telling the story of his early life and abuse and allowing others to have more than a peek into his early life.  I find his book to be so brutally honest, yet inspiring for the lessons that Dan teaches the reader -  lessons of resilience, acceptance, and a work ethic that leads a person to become the best he can be.

I applaud my friend Dan Blanchard for his honesty, integrity, and  courage.

"It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are." E. E. Cummings

Note: Dan and I are currently writing a book together, along with another friend, Dan Flores.  The subject is Professional Development for teachers, paraprofessionals, and administrators.. We are working on the final draft.  I will let you know when it is published

"Every student can learn, just not the same day, or in the same way." George Evans

Did you know that 1 in 6 children ages 3-17 will be diagnosed with a learning disability?  Teachers and administrators are constantly working and searching for the best ways to help all students learn, particularly those who do not learn well using traditional teaching methods.

When I was in the classroom, teachers and administrators were learning about best practices and experimental methods for helping kids learn, and now there is a new classroom assistant.  His name is Milo, and he is a 2-foot-tall robot made by RoboKind in Dallas, TX.

Who knew that a robotic teacher would be better than a real person for some kids with learning challenges ?  Yet, that is what seems to be the case.  In studies done, students were paying attention to the robot 87.5% of the time during interactions, and only paying attention 2.5% of the time with a therapist.

Who benefits from a robot teacher names Milo?  Researchers say that children with communication delays, autism, intellectual disabilities, emothional disabilities, and those with other learning challenges do well with the robot.  For some who have problems with human interactions, Milo is the best teacher.

A little boy named Mason, who has Downs Syndrome, was nonverbal just 5 years ago.  Now, thanks to Milo, he speaks full sentences and shows his emotions. I think this invention is truly remarkable, and I am happy to share the news about a robot as a teaching tool.

Please click on the link below to see a news story from WPXI on Milo and the children he is helping to learn.

"There is no power for change greater than a community discovering what it cares about." Margaret J. Wheatley

                                                                    Ellevate Network

On Thursday, I attended the unveiling of a mural in a little town in Pennsylvania called Zelienople. Zelienople is about 30 miles north of downtown Pittsburgh.  It has a beautiful main street a half mile long and lots of independently owned shops, rather than an empty downtown with a Walmart Plaza in the suburbs.  It is a truly charming little town.

My former colleague, Randy Hart, and his wife, Cindy, commissioned a mural of Zelienople in Christmas of 1956. 1956 was a big year for this little town - they established their own school district, and also had a brand new elementary school and a new community park.  In addition to the Christmas mural, they had a plaque made to commemorate children of friends, as well as family, who were taken from this life too soon.  Randy and Cindy's daughter, Jackie, got cancer at age 30.  After 93 treatments, she died at just 32 years old, leaving behind her loving parents and brother, as well as a grieving husband and children.  Randy and Cindy know others who have suffered a similar tragedy, so the plaque is dedicated to those families and children.  Here is a picture of both the plaque and the mural.

Commemorative plaque honoring children gone too soon

Randy Hart and Dede Rittman with "Christmas in 1956"

Zelienople is a town that has like-minded citizens who enjoy the small-town lifestyle and work together for the good of the town.  Houses rarely make it to the market here - so many people want to live in "Zelie" that word of mouth usually seals the deal beore having to go online. This particular mural is in a beautiful store called Haute Designs.  The new owner has exposed the original high tin ceiling and the brick wall.  So many merchants are onboard making Zelienople special that the town has an entire mile of murals!  (see article below)

If folks in western Pennsylvania are looking for a way to spend a relaxing and special day, they just might want to check out Zelieniople.  I have included a link below that lists all the festivals and shops.

Small town America, solid values, and family and community first are all values that live on in Zelienople.  Randy Hart is a true town leader, making his town a place where everyone wants to be. Congratulations on the new mural and all the strides forward Zelienople continues to make!

"A mentor is someone who allows you to see the hope inside yourself." Oprah Winfrey

                                                                        GraciousQuotes.com

I really enjoy sharing great ideas and good news stories that benefit people.  Even better, I like the idea of sharing something that could be easily emulated, benefitting even more folks.  I saw such a story earlier this week on the TODAY Show.

In New York City, Chief Juanita Holmes came up with an idea for a program called GIRLS TALK.  She came up with the idea when she was working her beat late in the wee hours, and young girls would be out on the street.  She believes that helping to promote public safety is just as important as fighting crime.  What began as just a few small meetings between local girls and a few female police officers has turned into a positive movement across the entire city. In this program, teenage girls are assigned a policewoman mentor, and the results so far in the four years of the program are wonderful.

One mentee said that her officer friend has always welcomed her with open arms.  She has learned how to be a better listener, to share stories, and to trust another person.  One young girl in the program has decided to complete her application to join the police force.  One mentee was afraid the first time she met her officer friend, but she has no more fear. This program has changed the feeling of fear to feelings of respect and caring.

A program like this requires something more than money -  it requires a personal investment of time, caring, and commitment.  Both the police and the girls are winners, in giving and receiving.

This program could easily be emulated across other cities and communities in the United States.

To see the video about this remarkable story about GIRLS TALK, please click on the link below.

"What mental health needs is more sunlight, more candor, more unashamed conversation." Glenn Close

                                                                        GoodTherapy.org

I saw a story on WPXI in Pittsburgh about an innovative mental health counselor who is taking the care to the patient.  She drives a van to see her child patients, and it is not just any van.  This van is fully equipped to help kids who are struggling - she has art therapy, play therapy, and other techniques to help kids, including toys, clay, crafts, dry erase boards, sand, and water therapies available in the van.

Doreen Upshaw is the CEO of Comfort Counseling and Support Services, which serves children ages 4-12 on the Northside of Pittsburgh, PA.  Ms. Upshaw saw the need for counseling grow when the pandemic hit.  Plus, children have anxiety for many other reasons - gun violence, family issues, school, fights in school, and they just don't know where they fit in or how to understand what is going on in the world around them.

Doreen Upshaw is doing her best to normalize mental health care.  She takes her bus to schools, after school programs, and even individual homes.  Before the bus, she saw a real problem with cancellations of appointments, some weather related, some life related.  Since she now drives to the patient, cancellations have diminished.  She is working hard to break the stigma of mental health issues.  I think her program could be a prototype to help children across the United States. Imagine overall impact of bringing mental health care to the patients!

Glenn Close said, "What mental health needs is more sunlight, more candor, more unashamed conversation." Doreen Upshaw is bringing all these things to mental health!
