"You spend years wishing your parents would get off your back, only to realize they're the only ones who ever really had your back."

                                                                        Wisdom Quotes

Pittsburgh is a very big sports town, and Pittsburgh also loves storiesabout an athlete with a big heart.  Personally, I enjoy the stories about the athletes/role models who show their fans how to live.  That's why my post topic this week is about Pittsburgh Steeler, Larry Ogunjobi.

Larry attended college at Charlotte, and he previously played for both the Browns and the Bengals.  He plays defensive end for the Pittsburgh Steelers.  Here is a link to his Wiki page:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Larry_Ogunjobi  By all accounts, Larry is a talented player and a great teammate!  But the thing that caught my attention was this - he just bought a new house for his parents!  He bought them their dream home! On his Instagram page, he wrote this:

"To the man and woman that gave me and my sister the world; and asked for nothing in return.  Here's a token of my appreciation!  You two are more than deserving.  Love you with everything I got. Congratulations, this is for you!"

These words are posted along with a picture of his parents in front of the house and Larry popping the cork on champagne.  This touches my heart.  Additionally, the words on his Instagram to describe himself read "More God, Less me."   To read a news article and see the picture, please follow this link: https://triblive.com/sports/steelers-larry-ogunjobi-buys-dream-home-for-parents/?fbclid=IwAR0cWuBW1LFeVq-oJHpJeA6x525VqRzy20RR86e40oPiMGvlNuPR0xsUdOA

Athletes are fun to watch and admire, and I appreciate their hard work and devotion to their sports.  Even more, however, I admire athletes who make a positive difference in the lives of others.  Larry's dedication to thanking his family for all their support through the years so he could become a professional athlete is absolutely inspiring!.  I hope he continues his good work and lessons to the young people who follow him.  Paying back is parents is a real class act.  Well done, Mr. Ogunjobi!

"A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops." Henry Adams

                                                            Brainy Quote

I have been writing this weekly blog on Education and inspiration since March of 2014.  Occasionally, I write about a person I admire, and one whom I believe to be inspiring to others.  Such is the case of today's subject, my friend Tom Taylor.

Tom Taylor had a great career as an elementary teacher in the North Hills School District.  His positive "can do" attitude, sunny disposition, and infinite patience, along with his love of teaching and of bringing out the best in students, won him acclaim and awards throughout his career.  Every teacher carries the burden of teaching - the endless hours of planning, correcting, parent phone calls, and the clerical work of the job are all-consuming.  Yet, for 47 years, during his entire career and beyond, Tom served as the Director of Music Worship and Music Ministries at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Allison Park, PA. Not only did Tom direct the Wesleyan choir, but he also added programs of handbells for children and adults, children's music, and live musicians to the worship services.  Tom initiated programs of musicals and theater, using the church talent, bringing together the entire congregation to work on projects larger than themselves, thus creating a true community within the church.  Tom found a way to include everyon - children and adults - and he guided many people to discover their abilities and new-found self-confidence, unknown to them until Tom helped them to grow within themselves. Tom is a true teacher in every aspect of his life. Additionally, Tom  worked with many ministers through the years to connect the sermon text with the songs of praise, embellishing and strengthening the message from the pulpit.  Together, the clergy and the music communicated thousands of important lessons through the years.

Tom inspired many people to study music and to become musicians,  He inspired others to become teachers. If a scale of positive influencers existed in our world, you would see Tom Taylor's name in the "TOP 10 POSITIVE INFLUENCERS OF ALL TIME."  I must point out that Tom did not work for his own glory, but rather to honor the Lord, whom he praises freely and openly.

Tom Taylor announced his retirement from his position as Minister of Music at St. Paul's a few months ago.  This past weekend, St. Paul's honored Tom with a gala party, a roast, and special music and a presentation during the Sunday service.  It was a beautiful weekend and experience, and I am so glad I had the chance to be a small part of it.  (I have only known Tom since January, when I first attended St. Paul's in my years' long search for a new church. In fact, I joined the choir before I joined the church!  The way Tom made me feel welcome and important to the choir was one of the reasons I chose to join St. Paul's, especially since I had been a Presbyterian my entire life.)  Folks came from as far away as Hawaii, Arizona, and Florida to honor Tom, and Walter Greenwood, former church organist at St. Paul's for 30 years, was the guest organist on Sunday, and he even composed and played a special postlude to honor Tom, called Grand March for a Humble Gentleman.

Although I have  known Tom Taylor for only 5 short months, I the impact he has had on others is apparent everywhere I turn in the church.  His goodness and light shines through in everything he does, and so does his kindness.  To honor Tom, the choir commissioned a special musical composition, by Daniel Blosser, which we learned and sang on Sunday, a great surprise for Tom.  The text of the song speaks so eloquently the words I am grasping for to honor Tom, as Tom truly is a blessing of light to all who know him. The song is based on this poem:

BLESSING OF LIGHT

May the blessing of light be on you – light without and light within.

May the blessed sunlight warm your heart like a fire,

So that stranger and friend may warm themselves in its glow,

Bidding wanderer shelter from the storm.

May the blessing of rain be on you, cleaning your Spirit and washing it clean.

May the blessing of great rains fall upon your soul,

So that flowers may spring up and shed sweetness into the air,

And leave many shining pools, and sometimes a star.

May the blessing of earth be on you, a kindly greeting for all whom you pass.

May the earth be soft beneath you when you rest at the end of the day;

May it lightly rest upon you, that your soul shall always be free.

Celtic Blessing

It is a pleasure to honor those who impact our lives in such a positive way.  Blessings to Tom and his family as he transitions into retirement, with special thanks from so many who honor and love him.  The weekend's accoladesa re so well-deserved! Tom leaves a legacy of love - love for the church, love for music, and the love of friends and family. His 47 years of work will live on in others.

"You are making a difference every day."

                                                                Planning in pajamas

I saw a human interest story on The TODAY SHOW that I must share!  It is about a favorite teacher in Wichita, kansas - but with a tie to my hometown sports team, The Pittsburgh Steelers.  Miss Lashay Powell, whom the students call "Miss Pow-Pow", LOVES the Steelers!  She met Kordell Stewart when she was 11 or 12 years old, and she chose the Pittsburgh Steelers as HER team.  As a surprise for Teacher Appreciation Week, her students gave her a custom Steelers jersey with number 25 (Kordell''s number) on the back.  She was ecstatic, and her reaction went viral on Tik Tok with 10 million views.  But that reaction was miniscule compared to her reaction when the TODAY SHOW invited Kordell Stewart to come to her school in person to deliver an armful of flowers and a basket of Steeler fan materials, along with two Steeler tickets to an upcoming game, and money for a vacation.  Here is the link where you can watch this uplifting story:

https://www.today.com/video/today-surprises-beloved-teacher-with-help-from-kordell-stewart-173662790002

I love this feel-good story for so many reasons!  First, what sweet students to surprise their favorite teacher in this way!  Second, I love that the Steelers are always in for doing something nice for someone - and what a truly heartfelt gesture for Kordell Stewart to appear in person at Miss Powell's school!  I also love anything that applauds the efforts of a good teacher.  I always hope stories like this will inspire others to become teachers.

Thank you to all the great teachers out there!  Keep doing what you do - it is so important.  You are making a difference every single day.

"Better than a thousand days of diligent study is one day with a great teacher." Japanese Proverb

Woman's Day

This week is Teacher Appreciation Week.  When I was teaching for those 37 years, I looked forward to that week .  At my school, North Allegheny Intermediate High School, in the northern suburbs of Pittsburgh, PA,  the Student Council always planned something special for the faculty - a luncheon, a program, special notes, or a surprise on our desks - flowers, or candy, just something small.  It didn't need to be anything big - our faculty appreciated the simple gesture of saying "thank you."

When I became a teacher, I realized even more, just how lucky I was to have so many great teachers in my school life and college life.  Those teachers shaped the person and teacher I became.  Becoming a part of the teaching profession inspired me to write thank you notes to some of my former teachers, and to reconnect with others.  When I was a student in their classes, I never realized just how much they taught me, but as a teacher, the lessons were clear, and I wanted to say "thank you!"

Why not make a teacher's day this week?  Reach out to a former teacher (or a current teacher) and let him or her know that you appreciate their efforts!  These notes and calls mean so much. As for me, I have saved every thank you note that I have received from students since 1974.

And to my teacher readers, HAPPY TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK!  Thank you for making a difference for so many students!
