"Be thankful for what you have; you'll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don't have, you will never, ever have enough." Oprah Winfrey

                                                                         AZ Quotes

In just two days, Thanksgiving will be here,  one of my favorite holidays.  No presents, no major decorating, just food - good food, turkey and gravy, mashed potatoes and pies, and lots of all of it. When my late husband and were younger and living in our beautiful 1936 Tudor house, we had as many as 40 guests every Thanksgiving!  Scott loved to cook, and we would make two 25 pound fresh turkeys with lots of stuffing, mountains of fluffy white mashed potatoes, homemade gravy, fresh cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes, and all the other accoutrements.  We started preparations early in the week, and by the time Thanksgiving Day came, we were exhausted! Our house was packed with people - we had some friends and family who came for hors d'oeuvres, some who came just for dessert, some who showed up for after-dinner drinks, and a throng of friends and family who stayed for the whole day. It was so much work, but there was so much love, so it was worth every minute of buying and prep time.

Scott and I always invited folks we knew who had no family.  Our late friends Leo and Marie, our friend Cam, and so many others.  Most of those folks who sat at our table all those years are gone now, yet the pleasant memories of those golden Thanksgiving days linger on and I bask in their glow every November.

I am making new memories now - with my brother, George, and his lovely wife Joan, and their 6 sons and their wives and so many beautiful children. It is a different kind of Thanksgiving, but just as rich and fun as the old days.  Do I wish for the old days?  Of course!  But they can no longer be, so I am embracing the new days.

When Scott first died, I was so sad that I could not even recognize what I had.  Grief colored everything black or gray.  Through the years, I have learned to concentrate on being grateful for all that I had then, and all that I have now, and the burden of my loss is lighter to carry.

I hope that you will find it in your heart to be thankful EVERY day, not just Thanksgiving Day.  I find that practicing gratitude each morning makes my day start better, and a positive attitude makes for a positive day.

Happy Thanksgiving, dear readers, and may many blessings come to you.

I LOVE writing. And I love writing children's books- my newest passion. Although it will be a ton of work, I am looking forward to selling my books.  Since I was a secondary teacher, I know that I have much to learn about elementary students, and I will have to follow my own advice and be my genuine self.  However, I also know that I am passionate about helping kids who have to wear glasses, and that GRADY GETS GLASSES sends a positive message. I am willing to work hard and do all the things that also made me a successful teacher for 37
years. I remain inspired!

"The greatest source of America's generosity is not our government; it's the good heart of the American people." George W. Bush

I think Americans are the most genterous people on the planet. If you do not agree, keep reading.

I always enjoy Steve Hartman stories on CBS, but the one last week touched my heart. An 80 year old veteran from Minnesota named Kenneth Jery used his mobility scooter every morning to visit a memorial for fallen soldiers in his town.  When his scooter broke, Ken lost not only his mobility, but also his purpose to honor those lost, and depression set in.  By a chance encounter, Ken met a young woman in a coffee shop and told her his story, and that woman, Amanda Kline, started an online fundraiser for Ken.  Amazingly, the fundraiser caught fire and Ken had a new scooter within days, and then he had another scooter with all the bells and whistles and flags within a short time.  Ken was taken care of, and he did not need another scooter, but the money kept pouring in, so he decided to pay it forward.  This year alone, Ken has donated 50 mobility scooters to needy veterans in his area!  He has a renewed purpose in life, and the generosity of Americans has helped so many veterans, as money continues to come in.  I love the generosity of Americans, and I love this story so much I had to share it.

Here is a link to the Steve Hartman Story on CBS. Well worth a look!

"Too many people overvalue what they are not and undervalue what they are." Malcolm Forbes

                                                                        AZ Quotes

This month, on November 20, I will be 70 years old.  I can't say for sure when that happened - it all seems like it was just in the blink of an eye!  I remember when my mother turned 70 and I asked her if she felt older.  "No," she said, "I feel the same inside as I did when I was 25; I just look older."  I now completely understand her statement

One thing I know for certain is this: Life is so short - and so fleeting.  This will be my 11th birthday without my dear husband, who only got 59 years on the worldly merry-go-round. I have had quite a bit of time to reflect on my life, and here are my top 10 thoughts about what I do to make each day positive:

1.  Play all the golf you can while you can.  Physical capabilities can be limited after even a minor mishap, so play while you can!

2. When you awaken each morning, begin with being thankful.  Starting out the day with a few spoken words of appreciation will make the day flow better.

3. Always make your bed unless you are sick.  Making your bed says that you are up and ready to face the day, even if you are not! Put on a happy face and get going.

4. Do at least one good deed every day.  Return a shopping cart from the store parking lot, compliment a stranger, help someone with their groceries, or let someone with one item in the line ahead of you.  Let the car turn in front of you, call a friend in need, or speak to a stranger. Your spirit will be renewed daily.

5. Write a card, note, or email to someone you have been thinking about and haven't seen in a long time. Renewing friendships is good for all souls.

6. Sing.  Sing in the shower, sing in the car, sing while you are dusting or vacuuming.  Singing makes the heart lighter, and when the heart is light, your steps will also be light!

7. When you see something beautiful, moving, or wonderful, say it aloud, even if you are alone.  Speaking about wonder and beauty makes them even more wonderful.

8. Read a little every day.  Reading keeps us current and our minds sharp. Learn something new every day.  It's good to think about new things.

9. Listen more than you talk, especially to younger folks.  Give your advice and opinion when they ask you for it.

10. Reflect on the past and enjoy the memories, but don't get rooted there.  If you keep looking backward, you won't be able to see where you are going. Time marches on.

These 10 items are things I have been doing more and more since I have lived alone, which is almost 11 years.  I try to stay positive, even when I spend a lot of time alone, like during the pandemic.  I hope these suggestions work for you!  You only get that one life, with no dress rehearsal.  You have to make the most of it.  You must value YOURSELF.
