I read an article recently that said teachers are quitting the profession in record numbers. I understand that the demands of the job are extreme, but in my 37 years in the classroom, so were the rewards. I saw an inspiring story on GOOD MORNING, AMERICA, that warmed my heart and made me think about just how wonderful the rewards of teaching could be.
A chorus teacher named Jim Stanley, in Cartersville High School, Georgia, was set to retire after teaching for 30 years. He was hoping to have a few choir alumni come back to sing with his current students for the final concert of the year. He was hoping to have 25 or so graduates involved. When he put his message out there, the alumni made a Facebook page and his former students came from all over the United States to be a part of the final performance. When interviewed, some said that the high school memories they made in choir were their favorite events in their high school years. Some wanted to honor the man who made school such fun. Others came out of love and appreciation for what Mr. Stanley had taught them.
This story is so uplifting! As I often write, a good teacher can make such a huge difference in a student's life. A gentle nudge from a teacher, or a kind word, or a bit of encouragement can change a student's life. From seeing this video, Jim Stanley changed MANY lives! I LOVE writing. And I love writing children's books- my newest passion. Although it will be a ton of work, I am looking forward to selling my books. Since I was a secondary teacher, I know that I have much to learn about elementary students, and I will have to follow my own advice and be my genuine self. However, I also know that I am passionate about helping kids who have to wear glasses, and that GRADY GETS GLASSES sends a positive message. I am willing to work hard and do all the things that also made me a successful teacher for 37
Teacher friends- let me know if you want me to read GRADY GETS GLASSES at your school. I am willing to come in to discuss the creative writing process, why writing is important, and personal fulfillment through writing, along with reading my book. I would appreciate the exposure, and I would make signed copies available for purchase in your classrooms following the reading. Please email me at dederittman@gmail.com The website www.gradygetsglasses.com now has plush Grady bunnies for sale!
