"We rise by lifting others." Robert Ingersoll

                                                                    Yourbeautifullife.org

A story caught my eye this past week, one that touched my heart.  You all know that I taught high school for 37 years, and I loved kids. Throughout my years in the classroom, I witnessed hundreds of random acts of kindness from students, and this story is just as special as the ones I saw personally.

Ryder Kilam is a 5 year old little boy who is wheelchair-bound because of spina bifida. It is about 75 feet for him to leave his house and get out to the curb to catch the bus, which takes him more than a few minutes.  In order to keep the bus on schedule, he waits on the sidewalk, protected from rainy elements by a large patio umbrella.  That umbrella worked fine in the early Fall, but his father recognized that it would not be a viable solution for the long winter in Rhode Island.

Ryder's dad put out a Facebook post asking if anyone had a shelter that they were no longer using.  That post was emailed to a young man in teacher Dan McKena's Construction Class at nearby Westerly High School. Dan is a 27 year veteran teacher who encourages projects that help the community, so when the request was brought to his attention, he and his class were in.  They would build a bus shelter for young Ryder.

For a few weeks, three classes worked together on the project, and then a senior stepped up to claim the bus shelter as his senior project. The group worked closely with Rider's family, and they made the shelter ADA compliant.  Home Depot donated some materials, and everyone worked together, guided by their teacher.  A graduate of the high school, who had also been in Mr. McKena's Construction Class, made the delivery.  To make this beautiful story run full circle, one of Ryder's older brothers is a student in the Construction Class, and he helped to complete the project for his little brother.

Ryder has not yet met all the young men and the teacher who fulfilled his need for a bus shelter, but he will soon.

This story personifies what is best in America and best in humanity.  Someone has a real need, and others step up to help. Both parties feel gratified that they have done something for other. Ryder gave the classes a purpose, and they gave Ryder a bus shelter.

"What if today, we were just grateful for everything?" Charlie Brown

                                                                  Better Homes & Gardens

I believe that Thanksgiving 2021 will be one of the most appreciated holidays in recent memory.  Last year, the COVID scare kept families apart for the holiday.  With the advent of vaccines and new treatments, even though people are still frightened, they seem to be a little more willing to get together.  The day should be WONDERFUL!

I will be driving 70 miles to be with my brother and his family in Mercer, PA.  Not all extended family members will be present - they were just diagnosed with COVID.  The older folks among us all have our vaccines and boosters, and some of the others have a natural immunity, since they had COVID earlier this year.  I am looking forward to Thanksgiving Day.  It such a great holiday, all about food and family, and I don't have to buy presents!

Wishing you a wonderful Thanksgiving Day with the ones you love, with the attitude of gratitude.

"If you can't feed a hundred people, then feed just one." Mother Teresa

                                                                    AZ Quotes

I recently stopped by a PNC Bank branch to drop off a $50 check for the KDKA Turkey Fund.  I was thinking back through the years, and wondered how many years this fund has been collected.  The answer is 40 years, and this was my 40th year to donate.

The premise is simple:  lots of families in the Pittsburgh area are food insufficient every day, and the Turkey Fund helps them to have enough to share with family and friends on Thanksgiving, a true American holiday.  By the way,  the fund has raised nearly $19 million dollars in those 40 years, which feeds a lot of folks!

I can remember my first contribution in 1981.  I was newly married, and my (late) husband and I saw the advertisement on television, requesting a $10 donation.  Back in 1981, $10 went a lot further than it does now!  We were happy to give.  For years thereafter, even when Scott was dying of cancer for almost 3 years, and he had no income, only a lot of medical bills, and I was working many extra jobs, we managed to scrape together the donation.  Why?  Because food is important.  Family is important. And sharing is important.

I am sure that many other cities across the United States have similar programs, but this is the one that touches my heart.  Thanksgiving is still 10 days away.  There is still time to share with others in your own community or in the Pittsburgh community.

"We can't help everyone, but everyone can help someone." Ronald Reagan

QuoteKind

This past week, I upgraded the router, booster, and the four television boxes in my house.  (Yes, I live alone, but I have four televisions!)  I did not know how to do most of this, but after watching a few YouTube videos, I was confident and able to complete the tasks at hand.  Next, I had to put five old television boxes (I got rid of an old set), the old router, and the old router booster into one big box.  I then had to get that box into the trunk of my car, and then to a UPS store.

When I first moved to my new condo after my husband died, I bought a little dolly to help me to move heavy things.  I think it cost about $40, but it has been invaluable these past 10 years.  When I got to the UPS store, I got the dolly out of the back of the SUV, then, with a lot of effort, I lifted the giant box out and put it on the ground.  I was trying to get the box on the dolly when I nice young man saw me struggling and asked it I needed help.  I answered yes.  He lifted the heavy box and walked it right inside the UPS store, put it on the counter (I was not the next person in line) and said, "Hey, Bud, I am putting this heavy box up here for this nice lady."  I thanked him, adding that life was certainly more difficult since my husband died, but that he had made my burden that morning so much lighter.  He politely said, "You're welcome.  Have a nice day," and went on his way.

I will be 69 years old this month, and with my increasing age, I find many things to be more challenging than they used to be.  Arthritis and  joint pain have forced me to have limitations.  For years, I was the one who was helping strangers, and on Saturday, I became the recipient of kindness from a stranger.  That kindness made my day.

"How others see you is not important. How you see yourself means everything."

                                                                      QUOTE MASTER

I always look for the positive stories to share with my readers, and I found a great one for this week!  It has to do with kids who have special needs, illnesses, or issues, and how to two people have helped them to see themselves differently.

A photographer and his wife, Josh and Roxanna Rossi, spend their own money having costumes made for their subjects, and then photographing them for various projects. John is a commercial photographer in Salt Lake City who has found a higher calling.  I saw this story on CBS SUNDAY MORNING on October 31, 2021, and I liked it so much, I have gone back to watch the video several more times. The way these two gifted people make their child subjects feel like superheroes is absolutely amazing, as well as transformational!  Not only does the child forget about his illness/issue for a few hours, but the child also gains a whole new perspective on himself, as see in the video.

Roxanna and Josh make each chlld and his/her parents feel so special.  They have a costume designer who makes each individual costume specifically for the child, which is very expensive. During a typical photo shoot, Josh captures over 500-1000 images of the child, many with special effects in mind, then he uses his own magic to make the pictures something uniquely wonderful.  The photos are stunning.

When you watch the story, take note of how the pictures changed the kids' perceptions.  One boy with a major heart issue now sees himself as "different" in a good way!  A boy who was bullied took his superhero picture to school, and the bullies apologized to him, and now leave him alone. These stories made me cry and cheer at the same time. I love and admire the work the Josh and Roxanna Rossi are doing for some very special child heroes.

Give yourself a treat - watch the clip from CBS SUNDAY MORNING.
